Inadvertent Destiny #004 - Destiny
A story about an unwanted destiny with a big responsibility part #004
Destiny
Everything here seemed bigger in an almost exaggeratedfashion. Not just bigger, but fancier, brighter. It was obvious thisSkoran place was nothing like his own world. Evan easily figured thatout when Fich took him to something that was similar to a phonebooth, from which they disappeared and reappeared in anotherbooth. She called it dematerializing and materializing. Evan wouldprobably have been more observant of his surroundings if he didn’thave thoughts of his family in mind. Fich had remained tight-lippedon the reason for their abduction and what role he had to play in allof it, it only served to make him even more nervous and agitated.Evan liked to get his options ready before making any moves. Thiswas pretty much uncharted territory for him in all aspects. Theyreached a rather large building with a gate so high, it could very wellcompete with any maximum prison, however, it looked nothing likethe gates of a prison with the vines and flowers surrounding it as wellas the gold-plated bars. Evan stared at it in wonder, only broken fromhis thoughts by Fich. “Your family is behind this gate, so are theDoshi, they all await you.” “The Doshi, what’s that?” Evan asked.“They are similar to what you would call the Council of Elders in yourworld. They make all of the important decisions here and it was upontheir request that your family was brought here. You will have toaddress them….”. “Wait a minute, address them? I don’t even knowthem”. “It only takes an introduction to know a people, they are verymuch familiar with you and they have all the answers you will need, but you will see them before you can see your family” she statedevenly. Evan glance at her and back at the gate, the magic word forhim was ‘family’ whenever she reminded him that he was here for hisfamily, a great amount of fear dissipated from him. Still, this entirething was shady for him, “Do they speak English?” Fich smiled, itwas the first genuine smile he had seen from her and it lookedbeautiful, “Have I not been conversing to you in your preferredlanguage all this time?”. “Yeah, but, you’ve been in my world. Theyhaven’t”. She shook her head, “There is a lot you are ignorant aboutEvan. The Doshi will educate you on it”. He stared at her without aword. whatever did she mean? “I wish you luck in getting your family. You will have to go alone from this point” “Go alone? Wait, howabout you?” he asked, panic immediately set in. “This is where Istop. I have come too far already, you can take it from here” “No, Ican’t” he protested. She smiled at him and walked away. Evanwatched her retreating form, glancing at the gate occasionally. Therewas no way he was expected to go this alone at this point. Hethought of going after her. if she wasn’t coming along with him, hewould have to suspend his rescue mission. The thought had barelycome to him when he heard a creaking sound, he looked ahead andfound that the gate was opening. This place just kept getting freakierand freakier. He felt a gust of wind around him, what followed werehis legs rising off the ground. Evan’s eyes widened as he felt himselflevitating, shit! he could only hope whatever was happening now wasa good thing. A heavy gust forced him past the gate. a loud shouttore out of him as he zipped through an open door and multiplehallways, only stopping in the middle of a large room…a large darkroom. The gust of wind slowly reduced and his legs returned to theground. He felt dizzy, freaked out and scared all at once. What sortof day was he having? “Welcome, Mr. Grey” a voice echoed throughthe room. Evan raised his eyes upward as if on cue, various menbegan to appear in the air, each seated until he was surrounded bythem….at least they looked like men. Their features were human, but not fully so. Just like Fich, their noses were thinner than normal, their cheekbones more pronounced, their hair colors varied fromblack to grey, purple, green and blue. He studied each one until hegot to the center. Right at the head was the man he had seen whenhe touched Fich earlier, he had the same frown on his hard face.Evan glared at the man, “We have been waiting for you” the manspoke up. “Where’s my family?”. “Safe” the man responded plainly.“What do you want with them? With me?”. “We do not want them foranything, however, you, you have been chosen as one of us. Whenyour parents came to this plane and nourished themselves with ourwater, they inadvertently made you, one of us. You have long beenaway from this plane and it is time you came to join your people, especially as we are most in need of your service” another manresponded. Evan stared at him like he was crazy, hell, he might aswell have had a horn on his head at this moment. What were theytalking about? How was he even one of them just because hismother drank some water? “In need of my service? One of you? What are you on about?”. “You see, you are a hybrid child. You areborn of human parents, but having been nourished from our waters, you are part Skorian as well. We have been waiting for one such asyou, you will be the one to lift the veil” the head of the council spoke. Now, he felt a migraine coming on, “Lift the veil? What veil? Cansomeone say something in plain English, so that I can understand?”.The members of the council exchanged glances, as if weighing theiroptions, before the leader spoke, “We will release your family back toyour world, but in exchange, you must remain here as part of thefulfillment of your destiny. We will train you for the next one year, andin the end, you will be the bridge between the human world and theSkorian world. This is the destiny you are to fulfill”. There was noway his basic life was about to be turned on its head. He had spentthe last four years running away from his family and theresponsibility of taking over the grocery store, and now, these peoplewere telling him he was supposed to be a bridge between twoworlds? He would give anything to be just a grocery store managerat this point. “Sadly, you are destined for something far greater andthe mundane will be of no value to you. The year you will spend herewill open your eyes to more things, grant you access to wisdom farbeyond your expectations, as well as gifts you never could imagine.”.There they went again, answering questions he had never spokenout, were they mind readers? “Yes, we have access to yourthoughts, and in time, you will have access to ours and manyothers.”. It all sounded fancy, and perhaps, if he thought better of it,exciting, but for now, he wanted to be assured of one thing, “And if Istay, you will release my family and no harm will come to them?”.“You have my word,” the council head said. Evan looked around him.He was a stranger to these people and their ways, a stranger to thisplane, to learn that they would place such a responsibility on him ofall people was staggering. It made no sense and it could very well, never make sense, but his only priority right now, was the safety ofhis family, and if he's staying behind meant their release, then hewould have to do that. He had stayed away from them for four yearswithout cause, one year away with a cause wouldn’t be so bad. “Iwant to see them first”.
His mother’s eyes were red from crying. She had apologized somany times, Evan had lost count. She told him how much shewished they had never found this place, she had begged for hisforgiveness. It was the most emotional he had ever seen her, but itwas all for naught. Everything had turned out like this and therecould be no regrets. Evan had been briefed about Skoran, he hadspent the last day learning fo the place and what was expected ofhim. Aside from the council of elders, the rest of the people werefriendlier. They were a lot like Fich, but they seemed extremelyexcited to be of service to him. it was a lot to take in, even more, knowing this would be his life over the next year, but it had made himfeel a little better about staying back. He stood at the gate, fromwhere his family would be transported back to the earthly plane. They would live the next year without him but would be unaware ofhis absence. At least that was what the council told him. it would belike he didn’t exist. He watched the forlorn looks on the faces of hisfamily; his mother, his father, Elvis and Edith. It would only hurt for afew seconds, but once they were gone, it would feel better. Hewaved one more time at them, knowing that once he was done withhis training here, he would be able to see them again. As theydematerialized, Evan could only wonder if his life would ever go backto being normal. He doubted it.
